All finishes used on my woodturnings are not waterproof. 

 

Wax and beeswax finishes show water spots after contact with water.  Keep these items away from areas subject to water contact.  These items can be dusted with a soft cloth with or without furniture polish.

 

Oil finished items have been rubbed with an organic safflower oil.  This finish is food safe.  You can renew this finish easily by applying a small amount of oil and then wiping off excess with a soft cloth.  Safflower oil is a good choice since it is a drying oil.  Items such as my bowls that have been finished with oil can be gotten wet or wiped with a wet cloth for cleaning.  However, they should not be left to sit in water.

 

Shellac is an alcohol soluble finish.  Anything with alcohol in it will dissolve the shellac.  It is also best to keep it away from water.
